Travellers can enter Syria by flying directly to Damascus or Aleppo or by travelling overland from Lebanon or Jordan. The best route depends on your nationality, available flights and where your itinerary begins.
This guide explains the four principal entry routes, the documents you may need and what to check before purchasing your ticket.
Four Main Ways to Enter Syria in 2026
| Entry route | Best for | Approximate transfer | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damascus Airport | Damascus and southern or central Syria | 30–45 minutes to central Damascus | Confirm entry approval before flying |
| Aleppo Airport | Aleppo and northern Syria | 20–30 minutes to central Aleppo | International routes are expanding but can change |
| Beirut via Masnaa | Combining Lebanon and Syria | 2.5–3.5 hours to Damascus | Border queues and Lebanese entry rules |
| Amman via Jaber–Nassib | Combining Jordan and Syria | 3.5–5 hours to Damascus | Longer road journey and advance document checks |
These times are estimates. Traffic, weather and border procedures can make land journeys longer.
Important: Visa fees are collected at Syrian airports and land borders. The amount depends on nationality and visa type and is normally paid in clean US-dollar notes.
1. Flying Directly to Damascus Airport (DAM)
Pros: Quickest access to the capital
Cons: Requires advance visa documentation before boarding and there will be visa fees.
Damascus International Airport and Aleppo International Airport are both operating and receiving an expanding number of international flights.
Damascus is normally the most convenient arrival point for trips beginning in the capital or covering southern and central Syria. Aleppo can be a better choice for itineraries beginning in northern Syria. Travellers can also arrive through one airport and depart through the other, reducing unnecessary driving.
Airlines, routes and departure times change frequently. For current information, check the official Damascus International Airport website or Aleppo International Airport website, then confirm the flight directly with the operating airline before purchasing a non-refundable ticket.
Depending on nationality, travellers may need visa or entry-approval documentation before boarding. Confirm the current requirements before booking your flight.
Airport transfers
- Damascus Airport is approximately 25 kilometres from central Damascus.
- Aleppo Airport is approximately 13 kilometres from central Aleppo.
- Syrian Guides can arrange airport pickup in either city.
- Contact us for the current transfer price and availability.
Because newly introduced routes can be delayed, rescheduled or cancelled, check the flight approximately 48 hours before departure and again on the day of travel.
2. Beirut Airport (Lebanon) ➡ Damascus by Land
Pros: Great option if you’re already exploring Lebanon
Cons: Longer travel time, border crossing
Entering Syria Through Beirut
Travellers can fly to Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport and continue to Damascus by road. The main route uses the Masnaa–Jdeidet Yabous border crossing.
The journey normally takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours, but border queues, traffic and weather can make it longer. A pre-arranged transfer is strongly recommended because the driver must understand the border procedures and current entry requirements.
Syrian Guides can arrange private transfers between Beirut and Damascus. Contact us for the current price and availability.
Travellers returning from Syria to Lebanon should also check Lebanon’s current land-entry rules and any applicable entry fee before travelling.
Entering Syria Through Amman
Travellers can also fly to Queen Alia International Airport in Jordan and continue to Damascus through the Jaber–Nassib border crossing.
The complete journey normally takes around 3.5 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and border procedures. This route is particularly useful for travellers combining Jordan and Syria.
Do not travel to the border without confirming that your visa or entry approval is ready. Syrian Guides can arrange private transfers between Amman and Damascus.
Visa and Entry Approval
Syria’s entry requirements vary according to nationality, entry point and method of travel. Some travellers need advance visa or entry-approval documentation, and airlines may ask to see this before allowing them to board.
Since 6 July 2025, visa fees have been collected at Syrian airports and land borders. The amount depends on nationality and visa type and is normally paid in clean US-dollar notes.
Before purchasing a non-refundable flight:
- Confirm whether your nationality requires advance approval.
- Check the current visa fee.
- Confirm that your intended airport or border crossing can process your entry.
- Carry printed and digital copies of your approval documents.
- Check your passport for Israeli stamps or border stamps that may indicate previous travel to Israel.

Internet After Arrival
Foreign visitors can normally register a local physical SIM using a passport and Syrian entry stamp. Buy it from an official MTN or Syriatel branch and make sure the data package works before leaving the shop.
eSIM service is available in Syria, but travellers should confirm whether registration using a foreign passport is currently accepted. Damascus International Airport also offers complimentary Wi-Fi for short sessions.

Money After Arrival
Syria remains largely cash-based for international visitors. Bring enough clean US-dollar notes for your trip and exchange money through a licensed exchange office.
Do not depend on foreign bank cards or ATMs. Keep some Syrian pounds for restaurants, shops, taxis and entrance tickets.

Airport Transportation
A pre-arranged airport pickup is normally the simplest option, especially if your flight arrives at night. Taxi prices and ride-hailing availability can change, so confirm the price before travelling.
Syrian Guides can arrange pickups from Damascus or Aleppo airports. Contact us with your flight number, arrival time and number of passengers for the current price.
Can Foreign Tourists Enter Syria From Turkey?
Land entry from Turkey is generally not available to ordinary foreign tourists. Most international visitors should fly into Damascus or Aleppo or enter through Lebanon or Jordan.

Which Entry Route Is Best?
Flying directly to Damascus is normally the simplest choice for travellers beginning in the capital. Aleppo Airport is more convenient for itineraries starting in northern Syria.
Beirut is useful for travellers combining Lebanon and Syria or when flights to Beirut are more convenient. Amman is a practical alternative for visitors travelling through Jordan.
