Travelers planning to fly to or from Damascus do not need to change their plans because of the fire reported at Damascus International Airport on Friday, October 30.

According to Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, a limited fire broke out at around 3:30 p.m. on the roof of the airport’s second terminal, which is still under construction. Airport fire and ambulance teams responded immediately and brought the fire under control before it could spread to other parts of the site.

No injuriesNo passengers, workers or emergency personnel were reported injured.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The fire was contained quickly

The aviation authority said airport emergency teams reacted immediately after the fire started and extinguished it in a short period of time. The incident was limited to the construction area and did not spread into the active passenger terminal.

Omar Hosari, president of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, inspected the site after the fire and ordered an investigation into the cause and circumstances.

Preliminary findings indicate that the fire was caused by an accidental technical fault during waterproofing work on the roof of the new building. The authority said the damage was limited to property.

FOR TRAVELERS

Damascus Airport remains open and operating normally

The most important point for international visitors is that the incident did not affect flights, airport operations or passenger services.

No airport closure was announced.

If you have a confirmed flight from Damascus, continue to follow your airline’s normal check-in instructions. The fire itself is not a reason to change your ticket or transfer plans.

Passengers should still check their airline’s live schedule before departure, as flight times can change for reasons unrelated to this incident.

WHY WE ARE REPORTING IT

A useful clarification for people planning to visit Syria

Images or reports of a fire at an international airport can easily create the impression that the airport has been closed or flights have been cancelled. In this case, that did not happen.

For anyone planning to travel to Syria or join a Syria tour through Damascus, the practical situation remains unchanged: Damascus International Airport is operating and scheduled flights are continuing.

We will continue to monitor airport, airline and border developments on our Syria Latest News page.
