Heavy Rain on the Road to Palmyra: 7 November Travel Update
Heavy rain has been reported on the road towards Palmyra today, while official sources confirm flood-damaged road sections in eastern Homs. Here’s what travelers should check before setting off.
News update · Saturday, 7 November 2026 · Road conditions may change without notice

Syrian Guides received a report of heavy rainfall on the approach to Palmyra today, Saturday 7 November 2026. We have not independently verified the exact affected stretch or a new closure of the main road. The official 3 November severe-weather warning forecasts moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms in parts of Homs governorate through the evening of 7 November. Reports published on 7 November also describe flood damage affecting the Al-Sukhnah, Al-Qaryatayn and Al-Sabaa Biyar roads in eastern Homs; see Syria One TV. This reporting does not amount to a verified closure of the newer Palmyra highway.
Practical advice: Confirm the route and road surface with your driver or local road authorities shortly before departure. Avoid the older flood-damaged alignment, driving through standing or moving floodwater, and travel after dark on uninspected road sections.
In a 29 October notice from the Homs Provincial Media Directorate, Civil Defence said the old Homs–Palmyra road was cut by floods and advised travelers to use the newer road. That announcement was dated 29 October; it does not by itself establish whether either alignment is fully passable on 7 November. We found no independently verified new blanket closure of the newer road today.
Road repairs continue in eastern Homs
On 6 November 2026, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported ongoing repairs to roads around Al-Sukhnah, Al-Qaryatayn and Al-Sabaa Biyar, following heavy rainfall and flash floods. The water had blocked drainage culverts, undermined parts of the road surface and left holes that complicated traffic, especially for heavy trucks.
According to that report, crews had repaired a damaged section near the Al-Qaryatayn junction and another on the Al-Sabaa Biyar route. The account describes active repair efforts; it does not confirm unrestricted travel on every road in the area.
Separately, in a 1 November provincial briefing, Homs authorities identified several damaged locations along the Palmyra–Homs road as requiring urgent attention. They also described difficulties on desert routes toward Al-Sukhnah and Deir ez-Zor after earlier floods. Those findings are important context, but they should not be mistaken for a new closure announcement issued today.
New flooding reported farther east
Flash flooding also affected the Albu Kamal area in eastern Deir ez-Zor overnight on 6–7 November. SANA reported that the Al-Suwayiya bridge was taken out of service after a surge of water, with damage to nearby homes and agricultural land. This is farther east than Palmyra and should not be described as a closure of the Palmyra–Homs road.
Syrian authorities had warned of heavy thunderstorms through Saturday, 7 November, including parts of Homs governorate. Further rainfall can affect low-lying crossings and previously damaged road sections.
What to check before visiting Palmyra
If you are planning to travel to Syria and visit Palmyra over the coming days, treat the road reports as a reason to verify your journey with a local operator shortly before departure, rather than relying on an older online status update.
- Check the current condition of your specific route with the local transport or road authorities and your driver or guide.
- Allow flexibility for inspections, temporary diversions or slower travel through damaged sections.
- Avoid driving after dark in affected desert areas when damaged road edges may be difficult to see.
- Never attempt to drive across flowing floodwater, even if the depth looks manageable.
- Confirm the return journey as well as the outbound route before setting off.
For visitors who want to visit Syria, a change to a day trip or a different stop may be sensible if local road reports remain uncertain. Any itinerary decision should be made using information available on the actual day of travel.
