An April-to-May journey through Syria’s living traditions.
The character of the journey

Spring is a story you can actually step into.

This is not simply a route from one famous landmark to the next. It is a chance to experience Syria when village gardens are green, the Damascene rose is coming into season and Orthodox Easter brings special meaning to a day in Maaloula.

The journey follows Syria’s contrasting landscapes: the intimacy of Damascus, the open steppe around Palmyra, historic Aleppo, the stone settlements of the north, Hama’s riverside, the walls of Krak des Chevaliers and Bosra’s black basalt architecture.

One country, nine days, and a very particular moment of spring.

✿

Damascene Rose Season

Visit the countryside where the Damascene rose is cultivated. When the harvest is active, meet growers or producers and discover rosewater, sweets and distillation.

Rose harvest and workshop availability are seasonal and weather-dependent.

✧

Orthodox Easter · 2 May

The route visits Maaloula on Orthodox Easter Sunday. Discover mountain monasteries and experience the religious atmosphere respectfully, with church visits coordinated around local worship.

Services and celebrations are community-led; attendance is not guaranteed.

✦

Sednaya & Saint George

Explore Sednaya’s monastic heritage and seek a local Saint George-related encounter if the church calendar and community arrangements allow.

Specific festival dates and public celebrations must be confirmed locally.

Read the full day story
The journey begins gently. Beyond the main streets of Damascus, old houses open into hidden courtyards, the markets are full of everyday life, and the city becomes particularly beautiful after sunset. We leave the exact first walk flexible so travellers arriving at different times can settle in comfortably.
The Damascene Rose & Old DamascusDAY 02
Sat 1 May 2027

The Damascene Rose & Old Damascus

A day of flowers, artisans and living history

  • Travel to a rose-growing village in the Damascus countryside, subject to harvest conditions.
  • Meet local growers or rosewater producers when arranged; learn about distillation, rose sweets and floral traditions.
  • Return to Damascus for the Umayyad Mosque, Al-Hamidiyah Souq and Bakdash ice cream.
  • Explore Khan Asaad Pasha, Azm Palace and the spice-scented Bzuriyeh Market.
  • Look inside a traditional Damascene craft workshop and enjoy the Old City in the evening.
Read the full day story
May is a particularly evocative time to discover the story of the Damascene rose. When the harvest and local producers are available, we spend time with the people whose work turns delicate petals into rosewater, perfumes and sweets. Back in Damascus, the focus changes from countryside to the textures of the old city: carved doors, busy market alleys, monumental architecture and conversations with artisans. The rose experience is seasonal and cannot be guaranteed on a particular day.
Maaloula, Orthodox Easter & PalmyraDAY 03
Sun 2 May 2027

Maaloula, Orthodox Easter & Palmyra

Ancient faith in the mountains, sunset in the desert

  • Drive north into the Qalamoun Mountains to Maaloula, one of the communities associated with Western Neo-Aramaic.
  • Visit Saint Thecla Monastery and the gorge, subject to opening and accessibility.
  • Visit Saints Sergius and Bacchus Monastery where possible and learn about the local Christian heritage.
  • Experience the atmosphere of Orthodox Easter in the village; a church visit or service depends on the community schedule.
  • Continue across the Syrian steppe toward Palmyra and settle in for the night.
Read the full day story
Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May in 2027, making this one of the journey’s most meaningful days. Maaloula is not simply a monument: faith, language, geography and family life meet in a remarkable mountain setting. We visit respectfully and adapt around local worship. The afternoon takes us from cliffs and monasteries into the openness of the Syrian desert, arriving in Palmyra for a night surrounded by a completely different landscape.
Palmyra, Homs & AleppoDAY 04
Mon 3 May 2027

Palmyra, Homs & Aleppo

From caravan kingdoms to Syria’s northern metropolis

  • Explore accessible areas of ancient Palmyra, including the Colonnaded Street, Roman Theatre and Agora as conditions permit.
  • Hear the story of Queen Zenobia, the caravan trade and the changing fate of this UNESCO site.
  • Optional viewpoint toward the ruins, dependent on local access.
  • Continue toward Homs for lunch and a look at city life if timing allows.
  • Travel north to Aleppo and check in for the evening.
Read the full day story
The morning belongs to Palmyra. Its monumental avenues and surviving columns tell the story of a place whose wealth came from connecting worlds. We also discuss the damage suffered by its heritage and the work of recovery without presenting damaged sites as spectacle. From the open desert, the road carries us to Homs and eventually Aleppo, one of Syria’s great historic cities. It is a substantial travel day, so stops are paced sensibly.
St Simeon & the Heart of AleppoDAY 05
Tue 4 May 2027

St Simeon & the Heart of Aleppo

Stone, spice markets and Aleppine craftsmanship

  • Visit the monumental church complex of Saint Simeon Stylites outside Aleppo where access permits.
  • Return to Aleppo for its Citadel and historic skyline; entry depends on opening arrangements.
  • Walk restored and surviving stretches of the covered souqs and old caravanserais.
  • Explore the Jdeideh quarter, its squares, churches and traditional houses.
  • Meet makers of Aleppo soap or other local crafts, subject to workshop availability.
  • Enjoy a traditional Aleppine lunch and free evening.
Read the full day story
North of Aleppo, Saint Simeon sits among the remains of a great pilgrimage complex. Its scale is memorable even before its story is told. The second half of the day is about the life of Aleppo itself: market traders, stone courtyards, soap-making traditions and a city continually finding ways to renew itself. Food is part of the experience, with time for Aleppine flavours rather than simply ticking off sites.
Dead Cities, Hama, Krak & WineryDAY 06
Wed 5 May 2027

Dead Cities, Hama, Krak & Winery

The grand road through northern and western Syria

  • Early departure toward an accessible Dead Cities site such as Serjella, subject to the approved route.
  • Continue to Hama to see the historic norias beside the Orontes River.
  • Drive through the countryside toward Krak des Chevaliers.
  • Explore the crusader-era fortress, including its halls, fortifications and valley panoramas.
  • Arrive in Wadi al-Nasara for a local winery visit or tasting for interested guests.
  • Overnight in the valley or nearby guesthouse.
Read the full day story
This is the longest and most varied road day of the journey. We move from the haunting stone remains of late-antique settlements to Hama’s great riverfront waterwheels, then climb toward the spectacular fortress of Krak des Chevaliers. By evening we trade stone walls for countryside hospitality in Wadi al-Nasara. The winery stop is optional for guests who do not drink alcohol; a non-alcoholic alternative is offered. Site order may change to make the driving practical.
Saint George festival in SednayaDAY 07
Thu 6 May 2027

Sednaya & St George Traditions

Mountain shrines, community heritage and Damascus

  • Travel from Wadi al-Nasara toward Sednaya in the mountains above Damascus.
  • Visit Our Lady of Sednaya Monastery if open and learn about its history and pilgrimage traditions.
  • Explore a local Saint George church or community celebration if arrangements and actual parish feast dates allow.
  • Allow time for village viewpoints, a simple local meal and community encounters.
  • Return to Damascus for an unhurried evening in the Old City.
Read the full day story
After the dramatic road day, the pace becomes more contemplative. Sednaya is a place of pilgrimage, mountain scenery and living Christian traditions. We will seek out a suitable Saint George-related local experience if one is taking place during the departure, but do not promise a specific festival, procession or public celebration until the parish and schedule confirm it. The day ends back in Damascus with free time to enjoy the city.
Bosra & the Black Basalt SouthDAY 08
Fri 7 May 2027

Bosra & the Black Basalt South

Roman theatre, living villages and a final Damascus evening

  • Drive south across the Hauran plain toward Bosra.
  • Visit the extraordinary Roman Theatre inside the ancient city.
  • Walk through the black basalt streets and explore Roman, Byzantine and Islamic heritage.
  • See further monuments and local neighbourhoods where access permits.
  • Enjoy lunch at a local family restaurant or host venue when arranged.
  • Return to Damascus with free time for final shopping or a traditional hammam.
Read the full day story
Bosra’s dark basalt architecture gives the city a character unlike anywhere else on the route. Its remarkably preserved theatre is the headline, but the quieter streets, domestic architecture and layered religious history are equally important. Our visit balances archaeological context with the people who live in the region today, before a final evening in Damascus.

  • Optional morning stroll, souvenir shopping or coffee depending on departure timing.
  • Transfer to the agreed departure point, Damascus Airport or Beirut as arranged.
  • Border or airport assistance as specified in the booking confirmation.
Read the full day story
After a final Damascene breakfast, there may be time for a last look at the souqs or a quiet coffee in a courtyard. Departure services are scheduled around guests’ confirmed flights and onward travel, so sightseeing on this final day is optional rather than guaranteed.

The published itinerary is indicative. Opening hours, permissions, worship schedules, weather and road conditions may require adjustments. Alternative experiences will be arranged where practical.

The Syrian table

From cherry kebab to home-cooked classics.

Aleppo speciality

Kebab Karaz · Cherry Kebab

Damascus & across Syria

Kibbeh Labaniyeh

Little bulgur-and-meat kibbeh dumplings cooked in warm, tangy yoghurt sauce with garlic and dried mint or coriander. Creamy, delicate and especially comforting.

Chickpea fatteh layers crisp bread, yoghurt and butter or nuts. Yabrak are tightly rolled vine leaves; mahashi are seasonal vegetables stuffed with seasoned rice and sometimes meat.

Breakfast, street food & sweets

Start with labneh, olives, eggs, fresh bread, makdous, fatteh and seasonal jams. Between visits, look for falafel, shawarma, manakish, sfiha and Aleppine pastries. Finish with pistachio sweets, barazek or traditional ice cream.

Spring flavours and special lunches

During rose season we may taste rosewater, rose-flavoured drinks and sweets. In Bosra, lunch may be at a family-run restaurant; in the Krak region, a village meal can accompany an optional winery tasting. A non-alcoholic alternative is always welcome.

Dishes vary by restaurant and availability. Vegetarian, vegan and other dietary requirements should be shared in advance.

Amazing experience. Incredible guides This was an amazing experience. From the first day when I wrote to ask about the trip until I was dropped off at the airport at the end, everything was professional and personal. Questions were always answered. Requests were always dealt with. And then the tour itself was fantastic. Our guide Gabriela was an absolutely amazing person to lead us through Syria. Her extensive knowledge of history, culture and different religions was amazing. Her kindness and personality made everyone in the group feel welcomed and appreciated. Thank you Gabriela. And lastly the food was indescribably delicious all the time. I recommend Syrian Guides 100%. I approve!

Excellent and comfortable adventure in Syria - amazing history and enlightenment! I had the good fortune of spending a week with my guide, Shamel and driver Phillip, both from Syrian guides. They were both excellent. Shamel was a wealth of knowledge, informing and enlightening me about so much of the Syrian history, both recent and past. the locations chosen provided a great cross-section of the country from Busra in the south to Aleppo in the north and from Palmyra in the east to Krak de Chevalier in the west. The hotels chosen were very nice and as expected. The historic boutique hotel in Damascus was an absolute pleasure. I enjoyed time with my guides as well as walking solo through Damascus. I highly recommend Syrian guides!

An Adventure in Damascus After my family finished a cruise in Istanbul, my middle son and I flew to Beirut. Syrian Guides picked us up at the airport, took us over the gorgeous Mt. Lebanon, smoothed our way through the border checkpoints, and whisked us to our Damascus hotel on the ancient Straight Street (mentioned in Acts 9:11), where we met our super articulate guide, Ayham. We spent 3 days touring Damascus and 1 in Palmyra. Four big takeaways: Damascus is super safe, inexpensive, friendly, and historic. The only problem is that the Syrian credit card system is still being restored and thus cash is required for everything. Ayham happily answered our barrage of questions and seemed to know everyone. One surprising thing was the large number of active and visible Christian churches in this overwhelmingly Muslim country. Syria is a great adventure. You should go now, while tourism in Syria is getting back on its feet.
