One of the most important historical and Christian heritage sites in northern Syria is welcoming visitors again.
On September 28, 2026, St. Simeon Monastery, also known as Qal’at Sem’an and the Church of Saint Simeon Stylites, reopened to visitors in the countryside of Aleppo after being closed for around 14 years.
The reopening took place as part of Syria’s World Tourism Day activities and followed restoration, rehabilitation, and safety works aimed at preparing the site to receive visitors again.
The work included cleaning and improving the surrounding areas, repairing visitor paths and facilities, and reinforcing parts of the historic structures that required additional protection and safety measures.
Why Is St. Simeon Monastery Important for Visitors to Syria?
St. Simeon Monastery is more than just an archaeological site near Aleppo. It is one of Syria’s most important ancient Christian heritage sites.
The site is associated with Saint Simeon Stylites, one of the best-known figures in the history of early Christian monasticism. He lived during the fifth century and became famous for spending much of his religious life on top of a pillar.
The area later developed into a large religious and architectural complex. Today, its surviving churches, stone arches, courtyards, and ancient buildings give visitors a fascinating look at Byzantine architecture and religious life in the region.
Qal’at Sem’an is also part of the Ancient Villages of Northern Syria, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A Historic Site Returns to Aleppo Travel Itineraries
The reopening of St. Simeon Monastery is good news for travelers planning to visit Syria, especially those interested in history, archaeology, architecture, and Christian heritage.
Visitors to Aleppo can once again include this important site in their travel plans while exploring northern Syria.
A visit to St. Simeon also offers travelers a different experience from the busy streets, traditional markets, and urban landmarks of Aleppo. The surrounding region is home to many ancient villages and archaeological sites dating back to different periods of Syrian history.
For travelers interested in discovering more than Syria’s major cities, the site offers another opportunity to explore the country’s rich and diverse heritage.
A New Digital Experience
Alongside the reopening, a dedicated digital platform for St. Simeon Monastery has also been introduced, allowing people outside Syria to learn more about the site and explore parts of it using virtual reality technology.
The initiative is part of a wider effort to use modern technology to present Syria’s archaeological and historical attractions in a more accessible and engaging way.
What Does This Mean for Travelers Planning to Visit Syria?
For travelers considering travel to Syria and planning to visit Aleppo, the reopening of St. Simeon Monastery adds another major historical attraction to the list of places worth exploring in northern Syria.
It also reflects ongoing efforts to rehabilitate archaeological and tourism sites and make them accessible to visitors again.
As more historical attractions return to travel itineraries, visitors to Syria have more opportunities to discover the country’s diverse heritage, from ancient cities and castles to monasteries, churches, and archaeological sites found throughout the country.
