We just finished an incredible group tour in Syria, the first of its kind since the fall of the Assad regime. A group of nine travelers from the US, UK, India, and the Czech Republic set out on a unique adventure. This was not just a sightseeing trip—it was a chance to connect with local people, experience Syrian culture, and witness the country’s rich history firsthand as it entered a new chapter.
Exploring Syria’s History and Culture
The journey started in Damascus, one of the world’s oldest cities. The group walked through the old streets, visited the famous Umayyad Mosque, and enjoyed traditional Syrian meals.
Next, they visited Maaloula, a village where people still speak Aramaic. In Homs and Hama, they saw a city in the process of rebuilding and admired the old water wheels. They also explored Idlib’s archaeological sites and Aleppo’s historic markets and the Citadel.
One of the highlights was visiting Krak des Chevaliers, a well-preserved medieval castle. They also explored the ruins of Palmyra, the ancient city of Bosra, and Suwayda, where they visited local winery and tasted Syrian wine.
Experiencing Ramadan in Syria
Since the tour took place during Ramadan, the group got to witness the festive atmosphere at night. Streets were full of lights, music, and the smell of fresh sweets. They watched traditional Sufi and Melawiyeh dancers perform and shared meals with Syrian families, experiencing local hospitality.
Friendships and Lasting Memories
Beyond sightseeing, the tour was about meeting people and understanding Syria. The group talked with locals from different backgrounds, shared meals in family homes, and gained a new perspective on the country’s history and culture.
Traveler Experiences
Aryaan from India usually travels solo but joined this tour after seeing Rami in a Bald and Bankrupt video in Syria. By the end, he said, “This was the best tour I have ever had. Syria is nothing like what CNN shows—it is a diverse and amazing country.”
Amy from the US was hesitant about a group tour but decided to go after her Syrian friends abroad recommended it. She said, “This was my best travel experience. The tour brought so much culture and context that I wouldn’t have had on my own.”
Chris from the US appreciated how personal the experience was. “Rami and Mary didn’t just teach us about Syria’s history—they connected us with its people and traditions. It was unforgettable.”
A Unique Travel Experience
This first group tour of nine people was more than just a trip—it was about learning, meeting new friends, and seeing Syria beyond the headlines. The travelers left with incredible memories and a deeper understanding of the country.
