UNESCO has officially inscribed Aleppo soap, a hallmark of Syria’s traditional industries, on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Known for its rich history spanning over 2,000 years, Aleppo soap has become a symbol of cultural identity and craftsmanship for Syrians.
Crafted from locally sourced olive oil and laurel oil, Aleppo soap is a natural product deeply rooted in Syrian heritage. The production process involves meticulous cooking over several hours, followed by a drying period that can last months to complete the saponification process.
Aleppo soap is not just a product but a cultural ambassador, representing Syria on a global scale. Despite the devastation caused by the war since 2011, which severely impacted soap factories in Aleppo, the industry has adapted and preserved its legacy. Many artisans relocated their operations abroad, ensuring Aleppo soap continued to reach international markets.
UNESCO’s recognition highlights the soap’s cultural significance and the resilience of its makers, honoring their dedication to preserving this timeless craft amid challenges.
