We had the absolute pleasure of hosting Sarah Dughan on our Christmas Tour in Syria last December. Sarah, a creative and passionate traveler, truly submerged herself in the culture, history, and spirit of the season, making her time with us unforgettable. Her kind words and reflections on the tour touched our hearts, and we’re excited to share her experience. Here’s what Sarah had to say about her journey with Syrian Guides:
Sarah’s Review About Her Christmas Tour in Syria:
“My number 1. travel experience! I went with Syrian Guides on their Christmas tour in Syria in December, and it was an incredibly magical time to visit Syria, particularly Damascus. Everyone was in full celebration, out on the streets, and we were able to witness all faiths and backgrounds come together to celebrate with markets, parades, dancing in the streets, and the best Christmas light display I have ever seen. I fell in love with Syria for its incredible history, food, and lovely people. Wandering through the narrow ancient streets, buying desserts in the Souq, marveling at the architecture of the mosques and churches, and drinking tea in a quaint café – but as a creative, I particularly loved talking to the people.
Syrian Guides gave me the space to experience all of these aspects of Syrian life without feeling rushed or suffocated by a rigid schedule. Rami was always there to talk, explain, philosophize, and have thoughtful discussions about culture, history, and the world. I always felt extremely safe throughout my time in Syria, thanks to Rami and his guidance. He was always present if anyone in the group needed him, but also knew when to give us space if we needed it.
One of the most special parts for me in this Christmas tour in Syria was the freedom to explore creatively. Rami trusted me to take photos and sketch people while he occupied the rest of the group, allowing me the time to catch up later. As a traveler, I felt respected and empowered. Syrian Guides trusted me to travel into Damascus on my own, let me explore markets solo, and as a photographer, I never felt pressured to rush through anything.
Rami’s knowledge of the incredible sites in Syria that we visited was exceptional. He was also flexible, changing the itinerary depending on who we met, and gave us room to choose our own adventure. There’s a lot of sensitivity needed to travel in a country affected by war, and Syrian Guides handled this with respect. They were never forceful in their views, and open to respectful discussions. They don’t encourage dark tourism, but we weren’t shielded from the realities of the war-torn areas, either.
I believe it’s important to see these aspects to understand the country’s present. With the help of the guides, we approached these places with thoughtfulness and respect. I couldn’t recommend Syrian Guides more, and I can’t wait to visit them again!”
We truly enjoyed having Sarah join our tour, and her reflections encapsulate the kind of meaningful experiences we aim to provide. Thank you, Sarah!
