At Syrian Guides, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Plamena, a solo traveler from Bulgaria, on her 10-day journey through Syria in November 2023. From the moment we met her, it was clear that she brought a special energy with her—a keen sense of curiosity and a deep appreciation for the history and culture of this ancient land. Plamena’s insightfulness, intellectual curiosity, and sensitivity to details made every moment of the tour a joy for us. She embraced every experience with open-mindedness, connecting with locals and exploring each site with genuine interest. It was an honor to show her around, and we couldn’t be happier to have been part of her adventure in Syria!
Read her experience in her own words below.
A Memorable Journey Begins
It was mid-November 2023 when I ventured on my 10-day journey through the ancient, enchanting lands of Syria. The route covered pretty much all the remarkable places and historical sights that are accessible and open to the public, revealing the country’s deep cultural tapestry.
A Solo Adventure with Local Insights
I am a female traveler from Bulgaria, and I’ve always felt a specific belonging to the ancient lands of the Middle East. So, with a curious heart, I went on my own—no group, no travel companion—seeking to embrace this once-hidden gem of a country. However, I enjoyed the cheerful companionship of my friends Mary and Rami from Syrian Guides, who did their absolute best to show me the true soul of Syria and its historical, cultural, and national treasures.
A Privilege of Connection
Privilege is what I honestly felt throughout my journey: meeting the locals, sharing their warm company and delectable food, and hearing some incredible stories firsthand, all while standing in places that echo with millennia of history.
Reflections and Revelations
Upon returning home, I couldn’t stop talking about Syria. I shared my experience with many people, and to my surprise, a lot of them began asking me curious questions about the country. I discovered that many are fascinated by Syria but lack the courage to visit it. Of course, it’s everyone’s personal decision, but I can only speak from my own experience.
A Lasting Impression
I felt perfectly safe throughout the entire country. I consider myself fortunate for the opportunity to explore Syria solo, yet accompanied by two young locals who were so knowledgeable. If I ever get the chance to return, I would seize it without hesitation.
